T-16, .00 Confederate States Note – PMG Very Fine 30
Offered for your consideration is a .00 note issued by the Confederate States of America in the early days of the Civil War, cataloged by the late Grover Criswell as a T-16. The central vignette features a ¾ facing view of Jefferson Davis, the first and only president of the Confederacy. Above and beside this portrait is a lengthy financial obligation which states that
“Six Months after the Ratification of a Treaty of Peace between the Confederate States and the United States The Confederate STATES OF AMERICA Will pay to the bearer on demand FIFTY DOLLARS”
, followed by the location,
“Richmond”
, and the date,
“Septr. 2
nd
1861”
. The signatures of “
T L Crouch
” and “
T O Keesee
” (Thomas O. Keesee) appear at the bottom, signing “
FOR REGISTER
” and “
FOR TREASURER
”, respectively. Two additional financial statements can be found, the first (part of which is printed at each end) indicating that this note was
“FUNDABLE IN 8 PER CENT STOCK OR BONDS OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES OF AMERICA”
, with the second (printed at the bottom) stating that it was
“Receivable in Payments of All Dues Except Export Duties”
. Green protectorates can be seen at the financial obligation and behind the signatures. The back, in common with many notes of the era, was left blank by the printers. The note was printed on “
CSA
” scrip watermarked paper by
“KEATINGE & BALL, RICHMOND, VA”
, a fact verified by their imprint near the left end of this piece. Confederate financial records indicate that only 426,016 pieces were originally issued, though how many still exist due to circulation and subsequent destruction is unknown. A nice, representative example of this early note, not commonly encountered on today’s collectors market. Worthy of a strong bid.
This note has been professionally graded and encapsulated by Paper Money Guaranty as
“Very Fine 30”
, with no additional notations on the holder. The note is reasonably well-centered, though the edges are somewhat irregular. Significant toning is present across the entire surface of the note, imparting to the piece an overall beige to tan hue, especially on the blank back. Soiling and some darker stains can be seen when the note is viewed from the back, as well as in scattered areas on the front. Minor ink corrosion is noted at the signatures, though no paper has been lost at this time. Numerous folds, as well as some extensive paper wrinkling commensurate with the grade, are particularly visible when the note is viewed from the back. Given the number of notes originally released, and the fact that they circulated heavily at the time, this is a great opportunity to add one to your collection.
